A Massive Effect On Things

While I will be talking about the video game, that isn’t what the whole post is about. But if that is all you want to read about, skip to the last paragraph.

Since the transplant, it seems like every few months I do one of these posts where I’m all “Hey, here is what I’m doing now–my big plan for myself–and disregard that other one I wrote, or the ones before that.” It’s a crappy feeling, because I’m not one to stop on a goal. But things have been harder since the operation. And a lot of it is from a feeling of just drifting. Most of that is cause I’ve never been able to really start a new living pattern.

Doctors aren’t helping with the mysterious problems with my legs, because of that I don’t feel comfortable driving the car and know that I couldn’t even handle even a desk job. Simple things that everyone takes for granted, but are the crux of living, socializing, and figuring out how you will go about your day. I’ve been filling my time with Eldritch Thoughts and The Non-Horror Reader Survey. But I’m not getting much out of it. It is just a form of productive time wasting. I’ve tried to get back to my writing, but I think I can understand how any writer has something traumatic happen and then they can’t write afterwards.

The best way to think of it is that before the event, you are driving along a flat road, then the engine fails. After that you have to shift into neutral and push till you get to the nearest mechanic or leave it on the side of the road and walk to get a tow. I tried pushing for a while, but the past two years there have been so many things, mostly medically related, that have made that road harder to navigate. So I’ve decided to pull over to the shoulder and walk my way to the mechanic.

By mechanic, I’m talking about going back to Seton Hill University’s Writing Popular Fiction program and, as they most of us M.A. alums are calling it, get the “F.” What I’m hoping is that an imposed structure will kickstart my writing again. When I was in the program before, it did that for me. I never thought I would write a novel and I did. Granted, it is not a great one, but half the battle is getting to that end point in a rough draft, most people never make it that far. This time, since I already have the M.A., it will be only a short time in the program, so I’ll be working on either a collection of stories or a novella. I really want to use the time to work on Lucin City and build it up more before I finish Scavenger. If I go with the story collection, it will also be an experiment related to my “Project 10″ idea. If I do the novella, it will most likely be the story I started back at Simon’s Rock that is set before Scavenger. But I have a back up, if that doesn’t fly, of returning to Nostrildamus. I had wanted something ready to capitalize on 2012, but when you think about it, either the doomsayers are right and it would be pointless to publish it now or they are wrong and they will find some other obscure prophesy I can make fun of them for.

But I will have time on my walk to the mechanic–I’m going to beat this metaphor to death, just so you know–but Eldritch Thoughts and Non-Horror Reader Survey aren’t major parts of what I have planned. I’m not going to put them on hold, but at the end of the month they will be more things I do if the inspiration hits. I’m doing this now because I know by the time  I start back at Seton Hill, they just can’t get the same attention I would need to give them. Also, because I have another project that I was asked to participate in that will be less time consuming, but equally fun, coming up. If you have been watching my Twitter feed lately, there has been a lot more talk of TV there. I’m not going to give out too much now except that it will involve television. So keep an eye out here. Most of the details are set, a few things are still being discussed, but hopefully it will start in early March.

March is also the month that Mass Effect 3 is released. For those that either know me of have followed my site for a while know, I’m a huge Star Wars fan. Mass Effect is possible one of the best examples of multi-media storytelling that Star Wars really pioneered over they years. Mass Effect in not just the video games, but books and comics and who knows what the future will hold. But more importantly, it is an amazing story. And since it is a great story, I’ve decided that as soon as my Women In Horror Month posts over at NHRS are finished, I’m going to go through the whole story–books, comics, and games–before I start on Mass Effect 3 when it releases. I haven’t decided if there will be posts related to it on here. But I wanted to forewarn of a potential massive geek-plosion soon here.

Onwards and Upwards

So I know quite a few people have been wondering what been going on with me. I know, majorly long time since anything from me. Not even one of my ill fated Big Blog Posts to fill in the weeks since my last post. To be honest, for the most part there wasn’t much to update.

Physical therapy is kicking my butt, I had a lot of muscle atrophy when I was in the hospital. Most of the week is recovering and resting from the 2 hours I do a week. I had a bit of a SNAFU with my white bloods cells not too long after my last post that has taken almost up until now to fix. There was a lot of changes in meds, treatments to get my white blood cells back to normal. So, its been busy, but nothing noteworthy. Or at least I didn’t think it was. I was just planning to stay out of things till i was back to about 75% again.

But I have some fairly big news. One is that for an indeterminate amount of time, this will be the last personal post here. If I have news or info that about my writing, I’ll post, but I’ll soon have my hands full that I just won’t have the time to keep this up to date.

The reason for that is I will soon be working over at Choate Road in a more significant role. Also, I think the July update of Choate Road will be the last Prescott’s Pulpit. We have some really fun and interesting things being worked on over there so keep your eyes peeled, because I promise that before summer is over, big things are going to happen there.

Other than that, just still recuperating from the transplant, trying to make sure I can get to Necon in July. I hoping to be able to stand for extended periods of time before I get there. There is a lot of standing at Necon.

So, for now, as He-Man said in the movie,

Good Journey,

W. D. Prescott

I Knew Sim City Skills Would Come Into Play Later In Life (WIP)

Man, that week went by fast. I finished two preliminary maps sections. Both contain key locations in my novel. As soon as the other three are finished I’ll scan them and post them over at Scattered Tales.

Two sections, more connected to my short stories, have been better fleshed out, almost enough that i might be able to come up with a few flash pieces or short stories out of them soon. I might weight till i figure out the stories for the other three so i can knock them all out at once.

I fighting with myself on another project that I want to do. It’s a mix of of soft Sci-fi, fantasy. mystery, and horror. I want to write it. There are a lot of scene ideas that are written in my Scrivener file that just need to be fleshed out. Only thing is that I have a lot of research to do. That’s including learning more about mystery writing, reading more mystery, and doing some police procedure research. At the moment, I’m not that strong to do it. It doesn’t stop the temptation, though.

I have too many stories I want to work on.

My Cart O’ Graphy (What A Graphy Is, I Don’t Know)

Many friends and fellow writers do Work In Progress Wednesday. It seems to work for them and as I am slowly getting back into my writing again, I thought I would give it a shot. New year, new me (sort of), new method to my madness.

One writer friend of mine has started work on a collection of short stories. I have wanted to do a collection for a while. When I was listen to details, I started thinking about my fictional setting, Lucin City, and my “in limbo” blog, Scattered Tales. I decided that what i need to do is a massive world building exercise and try to flesh out the setting more before I work on anything.

First step: Mapmaking

I already have a few stories and the first draft of my novel that has descriptions of key locations around the city. I made a rough map based on those descriptions that looks more like a flow chart than a map. Right now I’m in the middle of drawing a more detailed map using templates I found a while ago. What i hope to do is have a lots of blank buildings that I can use as settings for stories. If they are next to ones have used I will know what to incorporate to make the setting seem unified through all the stories.

Once that is done and start writing stories, on of the first ones will be what may actually turn into a novella. It’s a story I started way back in college and was where I created the setting of Lucin City. I still love reading the first sentences about the city in that story. It is also a prequel story to the novel I write for my Masters degree. As I work and finish other stories, I’ll submit them to markets. If they get accepted, great. If not, they will have a home in the collection or possibly Scattered Tales.

I also have ideas for a few anthology projects I’ve seen recently. The hard part is that the medicine I’m on makes me drowsy enough to make writing difficult. Do I try to push through and write for them, or concentrate on the collection? That is the question I still need to answer before the deadlines.
