Old Inspirations
During my recent “dry spell” I found myself going back to old hobbies of mine. It was funny to see things that connected them besides the obvious.
I remember back in sixth grade, I saw two friends of mine playing this card game, I was completely puzzled, yet intrigued. It was the Unlimited version of Magic the Gathering. The next time I went to the comic store I saw the display of booster packs and starter decks and thought, “eh, what the heck.” Now the only thing they didn’t tell me was that this was a collectible card game. Unfortunately, I come from a family with a horrible addiction to collections (hence the comics, mugs, first edition books, etc.). So from the Revised edition to the Visions expansion, I played and collected. One of the things that always kept me interested was the artwork, especially that of one Ron Spencer. his artwork just created stories in my head. I stopped after Visions because there were so many rule changes with every expansion that it was just getting confusing.
When I went to Simon’s Rock, it wasn’t long that role-playing games entered my life. While many of the games I played were D&D, it was the Old World of Darkness that got me hooked, mainly Werewolf: the Apocalypse. And what do you know, Ron Spencer did a lot of artwork for the line.
I’ve always been drawn to artwork as an inspiration. As a writer, I use words to make a vivid a picture in the mind of my reader as I can. When I look at art I see everything I hope to accomplish with words. I take in everything in a piece of art. The colors, shapes, the new ideas that no one came up with until this art came to be. It is a refreshing to go back to these old loves and I recommend that every writer have at least one artist they can go to as sort of a creative recharger.
